Town as Cavea: Greenroom of Bodrum
Halicarnassus was a city with great monuments. Looking at the ancient plan organization of Halicarnassus theatre, diazoma shows analogical relation with the city plan of the town. City plan has a planned diazoma, as Cardo Maximus, as an ancient trace in Bodrum. Through the history, Halicarnassus and Kos Island looked at each other, connected via festivals which are named ‘feriae’. They are two caveas of the gulf, looking at the sea. The term ‘-dia(prefix)’, means through, represent the town with its deep land and accumulated layers enhancing Bodrum. Through the ancient root, Bodrum has been a production town for its stage. Stage as a sea, and Bodrum had the role of backstage, and a greenroom. Considering the sea, underwater and above-water have different characteristics. Sea surface is a line in section plane, creating waves. Inspiring from that, three strategies had occurred: aliasing, damping, and fracturing. Taking references from deep land by aliasing, preserving the heritage by damping, providing visual and spatial relations by fracturing, a consistent strategy has been originated. Uncovering the existing ruins and understanding the landform are the two important aspects of the proposal.
