KNOW THE PAST / CHALLENGE THE PRESENT / CREATE THE FUTURE DESIGN AND INNOVATİON ACADEMY, AHMADABAD-INDIA
Although education is a basic human right, institutionalization makes it less accessible and inclusive. An educational system with divisive and exclusionary nature fostering segregation has been dominant in highly populated India due to the caste system. This project in Ahmadabad aims to utilize architecture as a catalyst for a future vision of more inclusive and open education to provide equal opportunities for different socio-economic groups. Architectural openness idea coming from Indian street tradition and culture is a central theme for spatial organization against traditional educational institutions. Programmatic spaces scattered in site with changing orientations, dimensions, heights, and landscape elements create several patterns of streets, passages, and courtyards. More formal “tube” street becoming a threshold between educational and accommodational units acts as an interaction space hosting various common functions and exhibitions.
