Transformer Vortices: Regenerating Values
The starting point is defining the problematic conditions in Bodrum which are the increasing population by emigration from the big cities to have a more peaceful and slow life. With this increasing population, Bodrum has a major problem of disruption of local culture and transformation of identity because of the invasion by newcomers. They are coming with their consuming behaviors and having adaptation problems to the local culture which causes unsustainable lifestyles. After facing all these conditions, it is seen that all the problems based on people and can only be solved by changing their perceptions. So focusing on the next generations is a logical strategy. All these problems caused by the new world’s capitalist lifestyle is critiqued with the ideas of Situationist Internationalists. They have a visionary understanding and method to understand the cities better. The "dérive method" is used to remap Bodrum again focusing on psychological experiences in the city. As a result of the experience, it is understood that there are some private places you cannot enter and walk around and it is not possible to really perceive the city as a non-local. A little hole in the wall is discovered with the perception of local children. The idea of a transitional hole is interpreted as a "vortex". A vortex acts like a tornado or a swirl. It happens between two energy fields so the start field and the end field are known but the vortex itself and what happens inside are uncontrollable and undefinable. Therefore vortex is used as a regenerating tool to recover the city. Vortices pierce through the existing context to continuously come into being to integrate the important values into Bodrum. In the site, vortices are coming, intersecting, and melting into each other to form continuous collections of experience spaces.
