RESTORING LIFE / REBUILDING COMMUNITY / RECONSTRUCTING CITY: ARCHITECTURAL RESPONSES TO URBAN AND SOCIAL READAPTATION IN TRAUMATISED CONTEXTS IDEAS AND PROPOSALS FOR ELAZIĞ
AS THE WIND BLOWS
As The Wind Blows
The project is an architectural response produced for traumatic areas especially the case of the Elazığ earthquake. Before starting the concept of the project an intensive analysis conducted, and the healing process of the traumatized areas tried to be understood. At the end of these analyses, other professions such as psychology used as a base for some key strategies to find an answer to the question 'How should be the places that are designed to heal?'. Other than this, another concept introduced which is called ‘tabula rasa’. It is a concept based on the strategy different incidents create different contexts. So the project contains an empty 3d grid structure which shaped according to its surrounding incidents so its context-bound capacity of the project is enhanced. It is a structure that is formed a combination of different structural systems and different functional spaces. The context of the project is adapted to time with the concept of "tabula rasa", every change and a new incident in the environment will be reflected in the project in time. Thus, this structure will gain a changing and growing identity with the city coherently. The best example of this statement is that we start with the project to solve the problems related to earthquake issues however these problems replaced with the coronavirus problems. Although both two incident leads a social trauma to the city their required solution in the meaning of architectural space is different. While the living units can be expanded for the earthquake, the health units can be increased in the case of a pandemic. With this high level of flexibility, the structure can experience the incidents and respond to them just like the inhabitants of the city.
