A CENTER FOR ARCHITECTURAL PRODUCTION AND EXCHANGE: DESIGNING AN IN-CITY CAMPUS FOR A SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE IN PARIS
City parks are indispensible public social elements for citizens of Paris to escape from the city rush . Parc de la Villette, where the project site is located, is one of the most significant ones with the distinction of Tschumi's dominant concept. Beside being an active, cultural and experimental open-air facility, Tschumi created artificial landscape formed by prairies, themed gardens and the Cinematic Promenade which is next to the site. Design objective for Paris-La Villette School of Architecture is to create a place for architectural education while creating strong connection between the school and the city of Paris. In order to achieve the isolation of the site from the park and to maintain the identity of the school requiring being part of the city, artificial topography was designed as the continuation of the park, starting with green surface coming from the green ground, forming the roof shell and end up with a transparent facade facing the canal to introduce the school life to the city. While the roof shell creates space for public, architectural education program is placed under this structure as a gathering place for both school and urban life. Courtyards are created with preservation of existing big trees and its topography is shaped according to the spaces organized around to promote common space for social and collective work.
