KNOW THE PAST / CHALLENGE THE PRESENT / CREATE THE FUTURE DESIGN AND INNOVATİON ACADEMY, AHMADABAD-INDIA
The main parameters of the design are climate, the direction of wind and sun angles, also the festival culture of Indian people, and street life. When starting the design first the required volumes were determined in the program. Then volumes were placed like the bricks of a wall, turning back of the mass to the sun. While increasing the volumes, large volumes were placed at low levels and small volumes at higher levels. Also, a common semi-open space was created in between buildings. The volumes were located on a 2 linear path and adjusted according to wind ventilation and sun angle. At the north part of the site, there are accommodation units, therefore it was located accommodation units at the north part, then I created an open space at the front of the Tagore Hall to increase interaction with it. We can understand the aerodynamic form of the canopy. Secondly, I suggested a canopy to cover the common outdoor space and create shade. When designing this canopy, I designed it in the form of a bird or an airplane wing, based on the main wind direction and maximizing the airflow. The angle of the units has been adjusted to be minimally affected by the sun. I have positioned the special rooms of the academy: the auditorium, the conference rooms, the theatre/movie venue, at the base of the ‘cliff ’ face, marking the northern boundary to the highway, encouraging cultural interaction with the wider public. I used it as a suture system by combining space truss systems with column beams and load-bearing walls. Space truss system was used at the canopy, load-bearing walls were used at some of the large units such as the conference hall and studios, and the whole building is elevated from the ground with columns and air passage under it is provided. Also, people can reach the inner sunken garden from under the building.
