A CONTEMPORARY INFRASTRUCTURE FOR ARCHITECTURAL CULTURE IN BOLOGNA
PORTICO REFRAMED IN BLOB
What makes Bologna different from other Italian cities in an architectural manner is the Portico. Portico is a three dimensional gate that connects the city form one point to another, but it also provides a state of inbetween; a new, inevitable urban platform. Over the porticos, the project seeks an answer for the question ‘Can the inbetween spaces solve the flexible, everchanging design problems?’In order to find the answer, there are certain design parameters set, given by the porticos such as cinematic frames, repetition, and the patterns of inbetween. With the given design programme, some functions are placed on imaginary blobs, and some laid inbetween, then the relation of function is moulded just like a ship spine. The spine holds the cinematic frames by themselves, but when they are aligned, spaces begin to take form. The large functional blob-spaces now can be divided into very small fragments, or remain as a hall for unforeseeable space requirements.
