VERTICAL CAMPUS: IZMIR SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN
A CREATIVE HAVEN
The design proposal for the Izmir School of Architecture and Design has been based on the site’s proximity to the city’s main pedestrian axis - Kordon, exposure to the sea and the port, presence of the highway pillars and, most importantly, the attempt at preserving two 19th-century edifices present on site. By following the former’s physical impact on the site’s configuration, the building aims to bring about the outcome of the different forces acting upon it. In addition to the preservation agenda, the remnants of a failed highway project have been used as integrated elements of the design and the gastronomical facility featured, whereas the whole complex is unified by the means of a passageway of ever differing character, winding its way from the historical buildings, encompassing the restaurant and the auditorium, and finally ending with capillary-like ramps in the major body of the edifice where the exhibition facilities and the library are located.
