Izmir City Museum
Izmir, being Turkey’s third largest city, is rich in culture and history. It grew from an ancient Aegean port city known as Smyrna, to a metropolitan city. Tourism flourishes for its coastline and pleasant climate throughout the year. A Vital Culture District was created to revive the Industrial Zone of Alsancak using Art and Culture as a means to establish livelihood for the residents. This, and the existing recreative spaces in the region make the region densely populated. A city museum is therefore proposed to unite different user groups through diverse activities which teach and express the culture of Izmir as well as making it globally renown. The design utilizes iconic location, dynamic form and function and scenery to achieve liveliness and a sense of freedom, the feelings that the city emits. The design therefore leads to give a ‘City within a city’ feeling.
