AN URBAN CREATIVE POLE: BAYRAKLI, IZMIR
Following the urban design project “The Mound, the City and the Sea: Rethinking the Future CBD and the Waterfront of Bayraklı in Izmir” of the first semester, our studio group focuses on a complex architectural program in the second term. The selected site consists of the northern part of the future CBD area developing on the old industrial zone, including the site of the old Piyale Pasta Factory that stretches along the Bornova Stream, thus neighboring the archaeological site of Old Smyrna. Making the city of Izmir a “design and innovation center” by reinforcing the relations of the city with the international networks between Mediterranean cities is defined as one of the main axes of the city’s vision in the Design Strategy Report of the Greater Municipality of Izmir. In this scope, we propose “an Urban Creative Pole,” i.e. a center for creative arts, design and innovation, which is expected to be an urban node of interaction between artists, designers and the citizens of all ages. The Urban Creative Pole is based on a sustainable social and economic model of management that aims to support artists and designers.
